Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has presented four Council Consideration Requests (CCRs) focused on food security, affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization, and public safety in District 2. These initiatives serve as a framework for addressing key community issues in San Antonio.
Targeting the pervasive issue of food deserts, the Grocery Store Incubator Program represents the District's resolve to enhance food access, and it has garnered support from Councilmembers Sukh Kaur (D1), Phyllis Viagran (D3), Melissa Cabello Havrda (D6), and John Courage (D9), signing the request to ensure the underserved areas can tap into a continuous supply of fresh and affordable food, according to the City of San Antonio.
The Faith-Based Land for Community Benefit Initiative seeks to transform underutilized church lots into a bastion of low-cost housing and child care options. In support of the initiative, the San Antonio Fire Department is conducting a Needs Assessment, endorsed by Councilmembers Kaur, Havrda, Marina Alderete Gavito (D7), and Marc Whyte (D10), to enhance the infrastructure necessary for ensuring public safety in the future.
The Vacant Property Revitalization Program aims to address vacancy issues by repurposing neglected properties, with Councilmembers Adriana Rocha Garcia (D4), Havrda, Alderete Gavito (D7), and Whyte (D10) supporting the initiative to transform unused spaces into affordable housing. Together, these CCRs lay the groundwork for a revitalized and more equitable San Antonio, as described by McKee-Rodriguez.
"These four CCRs work together to tackle long-standing challenges in our community," McKee-Rodriguez told the City of San Antonio. "By increasing food access, revitalizing vacant properties, supporting affordable housing, and strengthening emergency services, we are building a stronger and more sustainable future for San Antonio." Highlighting the importance of public involvement, the councilmember encourages community discussions to help refine the policies as they move through the legislative process, with the upcoming Governance Committee meeting serving as the next key step for these proposals.
