Facing the stark reality that finding a place to call home can be a herculean task for those fresh out of the penal system, Cuyahoga County is stepping up with a rental assistance program specifically for these justice-impacted individuals. According to Cuyahoga County's announcement, this is an arm of their Eight Point Plan for Housing Justice, meant to bolster the success rates of reentry into society.
Director of the Cuyahoga County Office of Reentry, Simeon Best, highlighted the connection between housing and reduced recidivism. "We know that justice-impacted individuals have significantly lower chances of recidivism when housing needs are met," Best explained, according to Cuyahoga County. This aid aims to do more than put a roof over heads. It’s fashioned as leverage for beneficiaries to find employment and nurture their families, desperately needed by the formerly incarcerated who currently reside in Cuyahoga County, demonstrating a need for housing assistance.
Those interested in rental assistance must hustle. Applications are open until March 21. The application process involves filling out an online form, providing necessary documentation, and detailing their reentry story. After the announcement of recipients during April's Reentry Awareness Month, the North Star neighborhood Reentry Resource Center will distribute the funds.
For individuals struggling with the application process or needing additional information, the Office of Reentry can be reached at the ready. Assistance is just a phone call away at 216-698-3437 or an email to [email protected], ensuring those in need can access the possibility for a stable future.
