A tragic incident in the Bronx has resulted in the death of a cyclist after a collision with an MTA bus, officials reported. According to Gothamist, the accident occurred around 10:45 p.m. yesterday when the bus, making a turn from East 149th Street onto Brook Avenue in Mott Haven, struck the 57-year-old man who was riding his bike. Authorities declared the man dead at the scene.
The 35-year-old bus driver remained at the crash site and as of now, has not been charged with any crime. In a statement obtained by Gothamist, an MTA spokesperson noted that the bus was operating as a replacement shuttle for the 2 train and had no passengers on board at the time of the incident. The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is currently investigating the crash.
Across the borough, in North Corona, Queens, another traffic-related fatality occurred early this morning. NYPD officials reported that a 24-year-old man driving a BMW on 107th Street collided with a 28-year-old man in a Mercedes-Benz driving east on Northern Boulevard. The young man was later pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital, while the driver of the Mercedes and his passenger were hospitalized in stable condition.
News 12 indicated that the name of the cyclist has not been released pending family notification. No arrests or charges in relations to the Mott Haven crash have been made as authorities continue to unravel the circumstances of the collision.
