An elderly Cleveland woman perished in a house fire yesterday, as reported by the Cleveland Division of Fire. The blaze occurred in the 3400 block of West 98th Street, engulfing all three residence floors. Firefighters faced significant obstacles due to "challenging hoarding conditions," according to FOX8, inside the house, which made the tragic situation even more complex.
The call came in at 1 p.m., with crews arriving to discover the fire had spread throughout the home. Working under difficult conditions, they struggled to reach the attic because of the extensive accumulation of belongings. According to FOX8, Cleveland fire Lt. Mike Norman, “It took crews quite a while. We had trouble getting to the attic,” noting the difficulties presented by the hoarded items.
The Cleveland Division of Fire updated the public through a post on X (formerly Twitter) at 2:09 p.m. that there was an "occupied house fire" and one adult female resident was unaccounted for. They later confirmed, at 2:33 p.m., the death of the elderly female resident, as noted in statements on social media covered by WKYC.
Identified as Caroleanne Danszczak, 82, the woman was ultimately located within the home. The fire's cause remains under investigation by state fire marshal's investigators, who, according to Cleveland firefighters, found several propane tanks inside the house, believed to be used for heating. Cleveland19 detailed the firefighters’ claims that the hoarding condition significantly slowed down their attempts to extinguish the fire and estimated damages to be around $210,000. No injuries to firefighters were reported.
