A fatal high-speed collision has claimed the life of an SUV driver on the Katy Freeway near Park Ten, as noted by the Houston Police Department; this incident occurred earlier today, necessitating the closure of the westbound Katy Freeway for investigation and clean-up duties. According to KHOU, the driver was reportedly weaving between lanes at a high rate of speed and despite activating hazard lights, they collided with a stationary 18-wheeler parked in the emergency lane.
The Houston Fire Department responded at the scene and confirmed the SUV driver's death, with the victim's identity still pending release, the crash caused major disruptions as investigators pieced together the sequence of events and traffic experts directed motorists toward alternative routes such as Park Row or the Westpark Tollway, according to Click2Houston.
Investigators are closely examining the possibility that speed was a significant contributing factor to the accident, while impairment remains unconfirmed as a cause, witness accounts have relayed that the vehicle seemed to be traveling at high speeds which Sgt. Dallas corroborated saying "It appears that he hit his brakes one time once he struck the wall and then he was back on the gas," in a statement obtained by KHOU.
While the driver of the 18-wheeler did not sustain injuries in the collision, HPD's Truck Enforcement Unit has been sent to inspect the larger vehicle as a procedural measure, despite the early indication that the truck was not at fault authorities remain diligent in their efforts working to determine the SUV's velocity upon impact.
