A tragic incident unfolded on the northbound lanes of US-131 near Kendaville Road in Montcalm County when a wrong-way collision claimed the life of a man and left two others seriously injured. According to the WZZM13 report, the accident occurred around 3:40 p.m. yesterday and involved a 71-year-old male driver from Newaygo who was driving at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction. He collided head-on with another vehicle, driven by a 50-year-old woman from Grand Rapids, who also had her 11-year-old son with her at the time.
The aftermath of the collision was severe, with all three individuals being transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The elder man later succumbed to his injuries, leaving the community to question how to prevent such tragic events. As per FOX17, the woman and her son's injuries were said to be non-life-threatening, and they are expected to eventually recover. The crash led to the closure of the highway for an extensive three and a half hours as Michigan State Police (MSP) conducted their on-site investigation.
On the day of the crash, traffic disruptions extended far beyond the immediate vicinity of the collision. Traffic maps indicated significant backups, with the entire northbound section of the freeway affected. This closure was reported by the MLive as starting just after Cannonsville Road (Exit 114), and it wasn't until just before 7:30 p.m. that the lanes were reopened to the public.
