A man from Florida was stopped at Pittsburgh International Airport this week after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers discovered a 9mm handgun and a box of ammunition in his possession. According to a report by WPXI, the incident marks the sixth gun that TSA officers have found at the airport so far this year.
The individual seemed to be partially aware of the guidelines for transporting firearms by air, as Gerardo Spero, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Pennsylvania, explained in a statement detailed by WPXI. "It looks like this individual missed a critical step when preparing to fly with his firearm," Spero said. The proper procedure involves ensuring the firearm is unloaded, packing it in a locked hard-sided case, and, crucially, declaring the weapon at the airline check-in counter. Spero pointed out that this ensures that "it is transported in the belly of the plane where nobody has access to it during the flight."
Last year's tally of confiscated guns stood at 42 for Pittsburgh International Airport, just two shy of the record 44 guns intercepted in 2023. The continual discovery of firearms at security checkpoints raises concern about gun safety and the public's awareness of existing travel regulations. Travelers who fail to comply with the rules for transporting guns on airplanes not only face potential federal charges but can also receive fines of up to $15,000.
To assist with compliance, the TSA has provided guidelines on properly packing a firearm for flight. The TSA's website offers tips and steps for travelers to follow, ensuring that weapons are transported legally and safely. This measure and vigilant security checks form part of the TSA's broader effort to mitigate the risks associated with guns and air travel. As noted in a report from Audacy, airline passengers can visit the TSA’s website for tips on properly packing a gun.
