In response to a series of violent crimes at the University of Houston, including a recent on-campus rape, State Representative Jolanda Jones has organized an emergency town hall meeting. The goal of the gathering is to address student and community concerns over campus safety and to work toward actionable solutions. The meeting is set to take place today at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Emancipation Park in Houston's Third Ward, as reported by Click2Houston.

The urgency of the town hall comes after a University of Houston student was assaulted at knifepoint earlier this month while in the process of cleaning her car at the Welcome Center Student Parking Garage. Eric Brown, a 40-year-old man, faces charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated sexual assault related to the incident. A miscommunication between the UH Police Department and the District Attorney's Office had led to his brief release after the initial arrest, as detailed by abc13. Brown was later re-arrested on Tuesday and is scheduled for a court appearance the same day as the town hall.

This attack was not an isolated incident. There have been reports of additional crimes on campus, such as scooter thefts and armed robberies, that have contributed to heightened safety concerns among the student body. During the recent spree of crimes, 28-year-old Steven Simon was arrested in connection with the scooter thefts. However, no suspect has been taken into custody for an armed cellphone robbery that occurred on campus.

Students have been advocating for improved security measures. The university has pledged to increase police presence and has promised what they call "improved coordination" for holding suspects accountable. "I would only wish the most justice for someone who went through something like that and (I'm) really glad it was in a somewhat timely manner that they were able to catch him," UH student Kate Jablonski told abc13.
