Islip, a suburban enclave on Long Island, was unsettled by a tragic event when a husband and wife, William and Eileen Clifford, were found dead at their home on Parsons Landing in what police suspect to be a murder-suicide. Suffolk County Police discovered the couple yesterday morning, the man lying outside and the woman inside, as per a report from NBC New York.
A garbage collector, in his routine morning service, stumbled upon William, 73, with gunshot wounds, outside their house. Despite his effort to assist, the 73-year-old tugboat operator was declared dead at the scene. The Suffolk County Police, as reported by The New York Post, said Eileen Clifford, 68, the man's wife, was also found dead within a bedroom of their residence.
Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer, from the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad, stated the married couple of 20 years had no known history of domestic violence, and the neighbors reportedly described them as "very nice." "It’s a tight-knit community. They were very friendly with the neighbors," Beyrer told NBC New York. William is believed to have shot his wife before killing himself in the driveway, and the firearm was registered in his name.
The couple's professional and social engagements depicted characters far removed from the grim narrative that unfolded that Thursday. William had graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy, and his wife Eileen was a former flight attendant and the president of the Kiwi Club of Long Island, as noted by The New York Post. She had been honored with a number of accolades, such as a presidential volunteer service award and a recognition letter signed by Hillary Clinton, according to the Kiwi Club website. In her personal bio, she referred to William as her "dear, wonderful husband," narratives that starkly contrast with the violent end to their lives.
Residents of the normally peaceful area expressed their disbelief, with one neighbor remarking to News 12 Long Island about how shocking the event was for the "very quiet, sleepy little town where nothing ever happens," as detailed by The New York Post.
