A 14-year-old boy from Jonesville, Michigan, was arrested after allegedly threatening to "shoot up" a classroom at Jonesville Middle School. The threat, which the teenager is said to have made on Thursday, included details about the specific classroom targeted, the time of the potential attack, and the type of weapon to be used—a gun reportedly received as a Christmas present, according to WILX.
Michigan State Police were notified of the threat after another student heard the remarks and informed his mother, who promptly called 911, as reported by WILX. The investigation led by troopers from the Jackson post of the Michigan State Police included interviewing the suspect, the suspect's mother, and other students who allegedly heard the threats. Upon determining the threat was "valid," law enforcement conducted a search of the teenager's home, seizing multiple guns.
The arrest was made and the suspect is currently being held at the Hillsdale County Youth Home. CBS Detroit reported that the teenager acted alone and, consequently, there is considered to be no further threat to the community. This incident prompted the closure of Jonesville Schools yesterday, as a safety precaution.
An investigation into the incident is still underway, and Hillsdale County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the case to decide on potential charges. "The suspect was specific with his threat, identifying the classroom, which hour he would carry out the attack, and what type of weapon he would use," police wrote in a statement obtained by CBS Detroit. In the wake of the situation, MSP emphasized the importance of community vigilance and the crucial role of reporting safety threats.
