In an effort to ramp up community preparedness for mental health crises, Kirkland is stepping up its game by offering free Mental Health First Aid classes to the locals. This initiative is a partnership between the City of Kirkland and Valley Cities and aims to equip residents with the skills to assist in mental health emergencies, much like CPR does for heart attacks.

The City of Kirkland must be feeling the pulse of mental health awareness because they've laid out plans for two free classes at the Kirkland Justice Center. The adult version of this class is on the calendar for March 21, while folks interested in learning about youth mental health first aid can mark March 28 on their schedules. While King County residents or workers can benefit from this, someone planning to drop by will find a session running from morning till the mid-afternoon.

Taught by certified professionals, this interactive course gets into the nitty-gritty of identifying mental health issues and stresses the possibility of recovery. It arms participants with a strategic five-step action plan to support someone in crisis until professional help takes the reins.

Speaking to the importance of community involvement, Councilmember Neal Black said, "First responders, including community responders, play a critical role in crisis situations, but community members are often the first to notice when someone is struggling." Black, who spilled these details to Kirkland's official news hub, emphasized that "Mental Health First Aid training ensures more people in our community can recognize the signs of a mental health crisis and take helpful action, including knowing the number to call for help."
