Strong northerly winds are expected in Las Vegas today and tomorrow, with speeds between 25 and 35 mph. Gusts may exceed 40 mph in the Colorado River Valley tomorrow. Temperatures will rise above normal heading into the weekend due to high pressure, resulting in a Minor HeatRisk warning for vulnerable individuals in the lowest desert valleys, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service Las Vegas reports that winds are the main weather concern. A shortwave system is causing wind gusts, especially in higher areas. Winds will lessen by this evening as a cold front moves through. Tomorrow, winds will pick up again in the Colorado River Valley, peaking in the morning and decreasing by the afternoon. Although no wind advisories are in effect, boaters on Lake Mohave should expect waves of 1 to 3 feet and take caution.
On Saturday, temperatures will begin to rise as an upper-level ridge moves in from the southeastern Pacific Ocean. A Minor HeatRisk is expected in low-lying desert areas, with temperatures possibly reaching 80°F in Las Vegas, Twentynine Palms, and Lake Havasu City. Aviation forecasts for Harry Reid Airport and nearby regions predict north-northwesterly winds by early morning, with gusts up to 20 knots. Other airports in southern Nevada, northwest Arizona, and southeast California may experience gusts over 40 knots near the CA/NV border and Colorado River Valley. Winds will continue through Friday, but no major weather impacts on airport operations are expected, as stated by the National Weather Service.
