In a display of swift action by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue team, a pair of climbers required rescue in Black Velvet Canyon, located within the scenic Red Rock area. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon while the climbers were on the second pitch of their rock climbing route.
According to a social media post by the LVMPD Search and Rescue, one of the climbers suffered a fall when a hold broke, prompting an immediate response from SAR personnel aboard AIR1. The accident, which occurred around 5 p.m., resulted in minor injuries to the fallen climber, including their head, arm, knee, and foot. Despite the mishap, the climber's partner demonstrated quick thinking and was able to rappel down to a ledge to commence a self-rescue operation.
SAR officers were dispatched to the scene via helicopter and successfully reached the ledge where the injured party was located. There, they provided treatment for the climber's injuries. The seamless coordination between ground and air rescue units was pivotal in ensuring the well-being of the climbers.
The SAR team successfully extracted both individuals, using a hoist to lift them from the risky location to the relative safety of the Late Night Trailhead. Upon safe arrival, "Both subjects were extracted via hoist and transferred to Late Night Trailhead where care for the injured climber was transferred to ground ambulance," as described in the LVMPD Search and Rescue. The climber's care was officially handed over to a ground ambulance, ensuring they received the necessary medical attention following the ordeal.
