The Las Vegas community has rallied to honor a fallen local law enforcement hero, Officer Jason Roscow of the North Las Vegas Police Department, with a display of thin blue line flags and a procession. John Waudby of Back Our Blue organized a tribute involving 17 flags, representing each year of Officer Roscow's service, at the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. The tribute is a poignant gesture that underscores Roscow's years of dedication to the community, News 3 LV reports.
Officer Roscow, who was 46, tragically lost his life in a shootout after responding to a report of an armed man in a local neighborhood. During a foot pursuit, the suspect, identified as Alexander Mathis, opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire that resulted in both Roscow and Mathis being fatally wounded. North Las Vegas Police have announced that Roscow will be laid to rest in his hometown of Prairie du Rocher, Illinois, although the exact date has not been disclosed. The dedicated officer leaves behind two young sons, according to statements obtained by News 3 LV.
The community paid their respects and showed support for the officer's family, friends, and colleagues during the procession, which began this morning at 9:00 AM. The procession followed a designated route starting on Jones Blvd, moving along US-95 South, transitioning to I-15 South, and ultimately reaching the Central Christian Church via Sahara Ave and Las Vegas Blvd South, as detailed in a social media post from NLVPD.
Commemoration efforts included a livestream of the processional on YouTube, courtesy of Waudby, to allow for broader community involvement. Local station News 3 provided live coverage of Officer Roscow's procession and funeral services on television and online, ensuring that those who could not attend in person still had the opportunity to participate in the collective mourning and recognition of the officer's ultimate sacrifice. He was remembered as a local hero whose legacy will be honored by both the people he served and the brothers and sisters in blue he fought alongside, according to News 3 LV.
