North Carolina educators have an opportunity to enhance STEM education in their classrooms through the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) STEM Scholarship Program. In a statement today, Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt urged teachers across the state to apply for the 2025 scholarships, which are designed to fund STEM initiatives in schools. "Our students deserve every opportunity to learn new skills, particularly in STEM-related fields to prepare for the jobs of the future," Lieutenant Governor Hunt said in a statement published on the State of North Carolina website.
This year's program will distribute funds to a dozen schools: eight recipients are slated to receive $1,000 each and another four will get $500 each, Hunt's statement indicates that this money must be put toward enhancing educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics – fields collectively known as STEM.
The NLGA established the scholarship program to bolster the integration of STEM in K-12 education, recognizing the growing importance such subjects hold in a rapidly advancing technological society. By providing the necessary resources, the scholarship intends to inspire not just learning, but innovation and creativity among young learners.
Applications for the NLGA STEM scholarships are open, with details and criteria available on the official Lieutenant Governor's website, educators across the state are encouraged to take this chance to incorporate more STEM demonstrations, projects, and necessary equipment into their curriculum, so as to spark curiosity and cultivate the skillsets vital for tomorrow's workforce.
