Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Sheriff Kevin McMahill recently unveiled the 2025 State of the Department, emphasizing strides in crime reduction and ongoing initiatives aimed at further bolstering community safety. The department reported significant drops in violent and property crimes, with homicides decreasing by 22.7 percent, robberies by 14.2 percent, burglaries by 9 percent, and motor vehicle theft by a substantial 29.6 percent, as per a social media post from LVMPD.
In light of 159 road fatalities last year, Undersheriff Andrew Walsh has called for increased focus on safer driving. The department is aiming to reduce road deaths to below 125 in the upcoming year. As part of this effort, LVMPD is advocating for the introduction of red-light cameras in the next legislative session to help monitor and prevent traffic-related incidents.
LVMPD is prioritizing technological advancements in its strategy to enhance operations, including the use of drones to improve officer safety and support criminal tracking. Additionally, the department will introduce an initial fleet of Cybertrucks, marking a significant shift in the design and capabilities of its vehicle resources.
In addition to these advancements, the department has made notable progress in its internal operations. The 911 dispatch center has reached full staffing, a significant improvement from the 50 percent level when Sheriff McMahill took office. The newly established LVMPD Wellness Bureau further enhances the support system for officers. Recruitment continues to be a priority, with the department working to address a 4 percent vacancy rate in its workforce.
LVMPD is expanding its presence in the community with new facilities, including the #HollywoodAreaCommand and the #SkyeCanyon Substation. Officers are also set to receive advanced training this year, focusing on techniques aimed at de-escalating potentially volatile situations and enhancing public safety. The department has set a goal to reduce officer-involved shootings by 50% through this training.
