The cold case unit of the Metropolitan Police Department is revisiting a shattering incident from 2005, now considered a homicide, following the recent death of the victim. Nearly two decades ago, a shooting in Southeast DC left a woman with injuries severe enough to confine her to a nursing home for the remainder of her life. In a release shared by the Metropolitan Police Department, the woman succumbed to these injuries last year, prompting new scrutiny from investigators.
In the early hours of September 27, 2005, Seventh District officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Atlantic Street after receiving reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Cheryl Stover, then an adult female, who had been shot. The local DC Fire and EMS team promptly rushed her to a hospital, and eventually, she was transferred to a Maryland nursing facility to continue to struggle with her injuries. According to MPD's release, Stover, who was 57 at the time of her passing, died on April 13, 2024.
The State of Maryland's Chief Medical Examiner has determined the manner of death to be a homicide. The delayed fatality highlights the protracted consequences of violent crimes, often extending beyond the initial act to affect individuals and their families for years. Now, MPD offers a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.
The public is urged to come forward with any knowledge related to the shooting, with authorities emphasizing that those with information should only call the police at (202) 727-9099 or text their tip to MPD's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
