Commemorating the three-year mark since Russia's incursion into Ukraine, Alderman Peter Burgelis is set to voice his support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people at a rally organized by Wisconsin Ukrainians, Inc. The event is scheduled for Sunday, February 23, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at 941 E. Wisconsin Ave, as confirmed by the City of Milwaukee advisory.
The gathering honors the courage and sacrifices of Ukrainians and calls for continued U.S. support in their fight for freedom. It includes speeches, tributes to defenders, community prayers for peace, and discussions on how to support Ukraine. The public is invited to attend. Alderman Burgelis, of Latvian descent, whose family fled Soviet oppression in the 1950s, has been a strong advocate for Ukraine, having authored the 2022 Milwaukee County resolution 22-556 to recognize diaspora groups helping Ukrainians and condemn Russian aggression.
An ex-Milwaukee County Supervisor, Burgelis carries his personal history into his political undertakings, much of his motivation coming not just from his role in governance but a familial legacy tinged by the echo of Soviet terror, his involvement in drafting the County resolution 22-556 is a testament to his commitment to such causes, having put significant effort into noting the contributions of diaspora and the heinous acts of war conducted in Ukraine.
