Milwaukee residents and visitors may soon have easier and safer access to the city's waterfront attractions. The Milwaukee City Development recently announced plans to improve pedestrian connections to Maier Festival Park, Discovery World, and other lakefront sites. These improvements, expected to be finished by late fall 2026, will include upgrades to North Lincoln Memorial Drive, which has long been a barrier for pedestrians wanting to visit the lakeside venues.
"It should be safer to cross North Lincoln Memorial Drive to reach Maier Festival Park, Discovery World and other Milwaukee lakefront attractions after street improvements are completed by late fall 2026," shared the Milwaukee City Development on its Facebook page. But the vision for the future doesn't end there. Officials are also exploring the concept of pedestrian bridges that would span over the busy thoroughfare of Lincoln Memorial Drive and the adjacent East Michigan Street, aiming to seamlessly integrate these landmarks with the city's bustling downtown core.
The city's plan is part of a larger consideration of changes to the nearby Interstate 794 corridor. One of the major ideas being considered is removing the freeway, which aligns with a national trend of rethinking urban space and mobility. Any changes to I-794 would significantly impact traffic and urban development, so they are being carefully considered alongside the pedestrian-friendly improvements, as per the Milwaukee City Development.
