In a dedicated push to honor Black History Month, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has emphasized the contributions of Black Americans to the fabric of local and national society. Aligning with this year's theme, "African Americans and Labor," Crowley's video message, which was released earlier this February and can be viewed from the Milwaukee County website, celebrates the transformative work and labor of Black individuals throughout American history.
Detailing the scope of influence, Crowley said, "From the traditional agricultural labor of enslaved Africans to organized labor’s role in fighting both economic and social injustice, Black people's work has been transformational throughout our nation's history." This statement, obtained by the Milwaukee County Government's official press release, underscores a history that intersects profoundly with the experience of Black people in the United States. Recognizing the collective effort, Crowley also noted that over half of Milwaukee County's department leaders and more than 30% of the staff identify as Black, a testament to the progress made in the community.
But Crowley insists, even with these strides, the journey towards racial equity is ongoing. "But while we’ve made incredible progress, we know our work is not done," he told Milwaukee County Government. As some attempt to marginalize the historical achievements and contributions of Black Americans, the County Executive reaffirms the importance of acknowledging and celebrating Black culture, especially now.
Looking to the future with steadfast determination, Crowley highlighted, "The challenges will persist, but our work must continue." His vision for Milwaukee County is that it becomes the healthiest in Wisconsin trough racial equity. He urges the community, during this significant month, to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Black Americans' roles in society and to recommit to working collectively towards this vision. Quoting Crowley's commitment, "It takes all of us, united together, to keep moving progress forward."
