In a move illustrating the county's commitment to its diverse population, Montgomery County has named Nelly Jiménez-Arévalo as its inaugural Director of Immigrant Affairs. Jiménez-Arévalo, carrying a remarkable track record as Executive Director and CEO of ACLAMO, steps into this new role with over two decades of leadership and service under her belt, focused on connecting Latino and other community members with crucial educational programs and social services.
Montgomery County's Board of Commissioners Chair, Neil K. Makhija expressed enthusiasm over the appointment. "I am thrilled to have Nelly Jiménez-Arévalo join Montgomery County as our Director of Immigrant Affairs. She has been a community leader in this space for more than 20 years and will be a great asset for the County and its residents," he said, according to a statement from Montgomery County. The new Office of Immigrant Affairs, where Jiménez-Arévalo will lead, aims to bolster the support systems for the 100,000-plus immigrant population of the region.
Vice Chair Jamila Winder also weighed in on the significance of Jiménez-Arévalo's work. "Montgomery County recognizes the challenges many immigrant families face, from navigating complex legal systems to confronting discrimination and economic barriers," Winder explained. "With decades of experience working closely with our diverse populations and nonprofit partners, Nelly Jiménez-Arévalo is a skilled and dedicated advocate for expanding access to essential resources." The Office of Immigrant Affairs will focus on connecting immigrant communities with housing, healthcare, legal assistance, and workforce development among other services.
The new director has expressed a personal commitment to the role, citing her journey and dedication to community empowerment. "My journey from Caracas to Norristown began 27 years ago. Since then, I have dedicated my life to making sure that everyone who makes Montgomery County home feels welcome and supported to thrive and achieve great things," Jiménez-Arévalo shared. She highlighted her pride in her work aimed at fostering community strength and cohesion.
While the federal immigration policies remain outside its purview, the new Office of Immigrant Affairs will nonetheless strive to ensure equitable access to resources for all residents of Montgomery County. The philosophy is clear: no matter the background, the goal is to help every individual contribute meaningfully to civic life and the local economy.
