New York City Mayor Eric Adams is making headway on his commitment to making the Big Apple a top-tier city for raising kids with a recent $7 million infusion to the "Fatherhood Initiative." This program has been a staple in the city for over 20 years and with the new cash influx, courtesy of Mayor Adams' administration, it's about to assist more dads than before. As per the official announcement, this expansion is set to double the number of fathers reached by the initiative, jumping from 1,500 to a solid 3,000 in the coming two fiscal years.

The "Fatherhood Initiative" doesn't shy away to directly invest not just money but also efforts into facilitating father-child reconnections, financial support and parenting skill development. To note, it arrives ahead of NYC's first symposium on the subject, “Empowering Fathers, Thriving Children: A Citywide Fatherhood Plan for Child Well-Being,” scheduled to hold court tomorrow. Mayor Adams is quoted saying, “To be the best city to raise a family, we need to ensure families remain connected and receive holistic support from city government. DYCD’s ‘Fatherhood Initiative’ has a proven track record of investing in fathers and families for over two decades. Now, our administration is going even further by doubling the program, expanding services, and ensuring that families continue to thrive in our city,” as mentioned on the city's official website.

Keith Howard, DYCD Commissioner, is also a real-life testament to the importance of supporting fathers, not to mention his own history as a single father. "Thanks to Mayor Adams’ forward-thinking investments and real-life experience as a father, DYCD will expand to serve twice as many dads and begin to serve custodial as well as non-custodial fathers, offering them more resources and support than ever before," he told the New York City Mayor's Office. The 'Fatherhood Initiative' has a strong 23-year track record, and this new expansion ensures it will continue with renewed energy.

Yet, the administration isn't just looking to slowly better serve the fatherhood community, they're also seriously upping the ante on early childhood education. Mayor Adams has overseen a skyrocketing number of 150,000 children enrolled in the early education system, a drop in out-of-pocket childcare costs, and has successfully offered a seat to every on-time 3-K applicant – a first for the city. A historic $100 million has been set aside for early education, supporting outreach and seat allocation across the city in partnership with the New York City Council. All this info comes from the same announcement.

And lest we forget the local support, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. is on board with all this, emphasizing "New York City truly is the best place to raise a family, and I'm proud to support the administration's effort to uplift and support thousands of fathers across our city, which in turn will strengthen our families and pay dividends in our communities for generations to come," he imparted to the Mayor's Office.
