A grisly discovery in the frigid waters of the East River has led to an arrest in New York City. The remains of 65-year-old Edwin Echevarria were found inside a suitcase, spotted by a ferry captain and pulled from the water by the Police Department's Harbor Unit. According to a statement obtained by ABC7NY, the suitcase, containing a torso zipped into a sleeping bag, was seen near Governor's Island last Wednesday.
Subsequent to the identification of Echevarria, police swiftly took into custody Christian Millet, the victim's 23-year-old roommate. In an apparent link to the crime, Millet allegedly made statements to law enforcement, which alluded to an ongoing dispute that tragically culminated in the violent act, as reported by ABC7NY. Millet has been charged with murder and is expected to be arraigned. Meanwhile, an unsettling detail emerged that he is alleged to have stamp to the ground his victim before proceeding to dismember him.
The motive of the killing remains undisclosed, undressing the layers of this urban horror still leaves the city with more questions than answers. The New York Times has revealed additional gruesome details of the case, stating that Millet confessed to knocking Mr. Echevarria to the ground and then "stamped on his head, killing him." He then allegedly used a tool to cut his body into pieces.
The police's discovery process of Mr. Echevarria's identity or what instigated this violence has not been shared with the public. Officers involved were originally called to aid by the Susan B. Anthony ferry's captain, unable to retrieve the suitcase by himself, and later transported the remains to Pier 16 on Manhattan's East Side.
