If you're planning to take care of any DMV-related business online this weekend in North Carolina, you're out of luck. The N.C. Department of Information Technology is pulling the plug on the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles online services and self-service kiosks for an extended stretch on Saturday. According to the announcement from NCDOT, they're expecting the outage to start at the stroke of midnight and continue until about 7 p.m.
But it's not just the public that will feel the impact of this digital downtime. External partners and vendors, who regularly tap into the NCDMV systems, will also find themselves staring at unavailable service screens. The planned outage isn't just a minor inconvenience, it's a full-stop for a range of activities on a day when many people typically handle their DMV chores.
The reason behind this tech blackout? It's not exactly spelled out beyond being a "planned outage," as mentioned on the NCDOT website, a scheduled pause, perhaps for maintenance or updates that one imagines are crucial—after all, why else take the system down for an entire day?
The Division has issued an apology for this hiccup in service, asking customers and partners to make the necessary adjustments to avoid being blindsided by the outages. "The Division apologizes for any inconvenience this NCDIT outage may cause," they expressed on the NCDOT website, also advising to plan ahead for these disruptions, understanding full well that a day without DMV services, is a day laced with potential frustration and delayed plans for many.
