As part of Black History Month, North Carolina's Governor Josh Stein has taken a moment to honor the state's Black entrepreneurs, hosting a reception that acknowledges their contributions to the economy and community. According to a release from the Office of the Governor, Stein emphasized that "Black North Carolinians have shaped our state for as long as it has existed," applauding their significant impact in varying sectors including politics, culture, and business.
"I am committed to supporting opportunities for Black entrepreneurship to thrive and creating an economy that works for everyone in our state," Governor Stein stated, expressing a strong stance on inclusive economic growth. The event, which was also attended by the African American Heritage Commission and the Legislative Black Caucus, aimed to shine a light on the transformative role that Black business leaders play in enhancing North Carolina's heritage and prosperity, the Governor has shared a proclamation declaring February as Black History Month in a gesture to solidify this recognition.
Dr. Valerie Johnson, Chair of the NC African American Heritage Commission, joined Stein in this commemoration, "I am proud to celebrate Black History month alongside Governor Stein, and to honor the legacy and life stories of Black North Carolinians who have made, and continue to make, valuable contributions to our state’s history, heritage, economy, and culture," she told the assembly, as noted in the Office of the Governor press release.
The chair of the NC Legislative Black Caucus, Senator Kandie Smith, remarked on the state's favorable business climate, stating on the Office of the Governor website, "North Carolina has consistently ranked at the top of doing business in America, and I am so proud to see more and more Black business owners and entrepreneurs in our great state," but Smith also highlighted the need for continuous support "As leaders, we must uplift one another and support all North Carolinians in pursuing their dreams of owning a small business," Senator Smith elaborated on the ongoing challenges and the need for collective support within the community.
