Houston is preparing for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with NRG Energy serving as the event's first official sponsor. According to Click2Houston, the company will have its name associated with NRG Stadium, which will temporarily be renamed Houston World Cup Stadium for sponsorship purposes, and will also work with the World Cup Houston Host Committee.
NRG Energy shared its enthusiasm about hosting seven international soccer matches in the city and outlined the details of the partnership. One of the initiatives includes a collaboration with Reliant, an NRG subsidiary, to offer youth soccer clinics with RISE Soccer Club. Former U.S. Men's National Team player Clint Dempsey, as reported by Sports Travel Magazine, will make a special appearance to share his expertise and encourage the young athletes.
"Our partnership with the World Cup Houston Host Committee marks an important moment for NRG and the city of Houston," Gin Kinney, NRG Chief Administrative Officer, said in a news statement cited by Click2Houston. "Together, we are bringing the excitement of world-class soccer to Houston and celebrating this moment to drive impact where it matters most – right here in our hometown." Chris Canetti, President of the FIFA World Cup 26 Houston Host Committee, expressed similar sentiments, stating, "NRG has been on board from the very beginning. They were our first sponsor, and their support has been integral to the Host Committee’s success."
Furthermore, as part of the World Cup festivities, NRG will participate in the Houston FIFA Fan Festival celebrations. "This collaboration aims to elevate soccer’s presence in Houston and inspire greater youth participation in the sport," Kinney told Click2Houston.
