An Oakland County woman is facing charges of animal cruelty after allegedly neglecting her two dogs to the point that both had to be euthanized. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald condemned the neglect as "unacceptable," highlighting the importance of the community's role in ensuring animal welfare. The attention of authorities was drawn to the case when a veterinary clinic contacted Oakland County Animal Control about a dog that was put down with the consent of the owner, 32-year-old Ariel Lowes from Holly Township, who, as per FOX 2 Detroit, had brought in a dog suffering from a severely ruptured, cancerous tumor on its face.
Following this initial contact, another of Lowes' dogs was discovered in medical distress, compelling authorities to also euthanize it for humanitarian reasons. Although specifics of the second dog’s ailment were not disclosed, it highlights a tragic consequence of neglect occurring within the home that could have been prevented. The charges against Lowes were revealed by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, with Karen McDonald expressing, as per Audacy, that while "resources are available if animal owners have obstacles to obtaining veterinary services," there is an "obligation to care for animals in their possession."
The distressing case has led to a public appeal from the prosecutor, urging anyone who suspects an animal is being mistreated or is struggling to care for their pet to contact Animal Control, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit, the Oakland County Animal Control can be reached at 248-858-1090.
