Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, along with the Office of Budget Management's Director Kim Murnieks, recently unveiled the 2026-2027 executive budget proposal, emphasizing investments in the state's population—the budget advances programs supporting children, families, the workforce, and communities, aiming to foster sustainable economic growth, as reported by Governor DeWine's official website.
Under DeWine's new budget, Ohio seeks to incentivize parental workforce participation with a refundable child tax credit which phases out at certain income levels and offers $1,000 per child for qualifying full-time minimum wage workers in the attempt to build on Ohio's assets, directing focus to its populace, Murnieks described the budget as a conservative forecast, balanced and aimed at long-term prosperity, these details articulated during the introduction of the budget.
For Ohio's youth, the proposed budget ensures vision care by creating the OhioSEE program, which targets kindergarteners through third graders, is projected to aid 33,000 children with comprehensive eye exams and glasses if needed, and continues to bolster literacy through coaching and mandates increased literacy support in schools with low proficient reader rates.
Addressing Ohio's future workforce, scholarships and work-learning opportunities for high students are ramped up with the introduction of the Governor's Merit Scholarship to retain local talent and a novel initiative tying higher education funding to graduate employment outcomes as Ohio strives to pioneer educational initiatives—the top 5% of each high school graduating class becomes eligible for a $5,000 scholarship, with a significant 76% uptake among the 2024 class, exemplifying the program's allure.
The budget's community-focused efforts include advancements in emergency services like the Next Generation 911 system, further support for local drug task forces, and the construction of a state-of-the-art training center for peace officers, in addition to ongoing environmental initiatives through H2Ohio, seeking to enhance water quality for the state's prosperity.
