The City of Orlando is set to launch its Black History Month Art Exhibition this week, offering residents the chance to immerse themselves in local artworks inspired by this year’s national theme, “African Americans and Labor.” As reported by Bungalower, the exhibition will commence with an Opening Reception at Orlando's Terrace Gallery, City Hall, on Wednesday between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Shan Rose, and District 6 City Commissioner Bakari F. Burns will attend to celebrate the event.
Featuring over 30 local artists, the exhibit aims to shine a light on Black individuals' contributions. According to WFTV, the event promises a deep dive into artworks that interpret the depth and breadth of labor's transformative influence in the context of Black culture. Exhibiting art sets to run through March 30, 2025, will give viewers ample time to engage with creative expressions.
In addition to the art exhibition, a Community Celebration event is slated for February 11 at New Covenant Baptist Church, complete with a screening of the PBS docuseries GOSPEL!' The collaboration with Bank of America and WUCF TV/PBS will feature a reception, various performances, and a panel of community leaders to discuss the series, which chronicles the history of Black spirituality through music. The event, promising to evoke a blend of education and entertainment, welcomes the public with complimentary parking, fostering broader community involvement.
An interactive element, the "Meet the Artists" reception is scheduled for February 26, providing an intimate morning rendezvous with the artists behind the showcased work from 10 a.m. to noon. Organized in partnership with the Downtown Orlando Partnership and Orlando Credit Union, the occasion offers a continental breakfast and a platform for dialogue about the artists' journeys and creative inspirations responsible for their contributions to the city's rich African American heritage.
