An Orlando man has entered a guilty plea to federal charges of possessing an illegal machine gun, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Identified as Timothy Aden-Alan Calhoun, age 27, the man is now facing a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison after being stopped by authorities for a traffic violation.
The traffic stop conducted by the Maitland Police Department escalated quickly to uncover the serious nature of the offense. Officers found a Glock 19 semi-automatic handgun in Calhoun's possession, which had been modified with a device to convert it into a fully automatic firearm. The illegal alteration was confirmed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, who labeled the modified weapon as a machine gun, a type of armament that requires special registration under the National Firearms Act. Calhoun had failed to register the converted firearm properly.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Calhoun's plea agreement led to the scheduled sentencing on June 12, which included forfeiture of the illicit firearm. According to a statement from Acting United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney, this case forms part of the overarching Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which aims to unite law enforcement efforts at every level to diminish violent crime and ensure safer communities.
