Ottawa County's Bend Area Park Restored: EGLE Seals Decades-Old Wells Enhancing Lake ViewsSource: Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy

Those who frequent Bend Area Park in Ottawa County, Michigan, can look forward to uninterrupted lake views, thanks to a recent intervention by the department. The organization has successfully plugged two old, leaking wells, Van Single 1 and 2. According to a report from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, this effort marks only the second time in the past three decades that such an undertaking has been necessary.

The history of these wells traces back to 1940, when both were drilled, with Van Single 1 serving as an oil well until 1976. Eventually, a gravel pit surrounded the wells, and when it closed, the pit filled with water, transforming into a lake now owned by Ottawa County Parks. Over the years, the most noticeable remnants were the metal well casings, reminiscent of "submarine periscopes," interrupting the lake's calm surface. The need to address these eyesores and environmental risks led EGLE's Geologic Resources Management Division to take action, plugging the wells in a project that extended from July to October 2024.

The operation employed the expertise of Taplin Environmental and Excel Site Rentals, which faced the challenge of an offshore plugging operation. A unique barge system equipped with an independent propulsion system facilitated the transportation of the drilling rig and essential equipment. After cleaning the wells, the team plugged them with cement until they reached the surface, then cut and capped the casings just above the lakebed. This method secured the wells and preserved the lake's visual integrity.

Completing the project also involved the removal of the boat launch used for the operation, followed by comprehensive shore and upland restoration, ensuring no trace of the intervention marred the park’s aesthetic. As per the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, all disturbances were "fully restored to the satisfaction of Ottawa County Parks." Those visiting the park now would scarcely believe that beneath its peaceful waters lay two meticulously sealed wells, their previous presence now relegated to history.
