Over 200 employees are bracing to permanently lose their jobs as Macy's prepares to shutter its stores at the Lakeside and Oakland Malls in Metro Detroit. Notices served by Macy's Human Resources Department to the state detailed that 117 jobs at the Sterling Heights location and 92 at the Troy site are to be cut between March 18 and March 31, plant closures that are a segment of the company's broader downsizing strategy. These two malls were among 66 Macy's stores branded as "underproductive"; therefore, they are scheduled to close this year, as reported by WWJ Newsradio.
The retail giant has initiated layoffs corresponding with its "Bold New Chapter" plan, which intends to sustainably and profitably reinvigorate sales growth. This strategy includes subtracting approximately 150 stores over three years and concentrating investments into the remaining 350 Macy's locations through the fiscal year 2026. Lakeside and Oakland Mall closures are set to reduce the company's presence in Southeast Michigan to five locations, a course of action informed by a January filed WARN notice with the state, according to The Detroit News.
Unions represent none of the employees and have no rights to be displaced by other workers in the case of layoffs, an unpleasant reality confirmed by Allison Johnson, Macy's vice president of human resources, in the notice reported by Daily Tribune.
