Philadelphia seniors are getting a financial break on their water bills, thanks to a city discount program tailored for those meeting certain income requirements. As detailed on the City of Philadelphia's official website, the program offers a 25% reduction in water bills for eligible seniors. To qualify, seniors must be 65 or older, live at the address listed on their application, have the water bill in their name, and have a household income that does not exceed $38,800.
Tenants who don't see their names on the water bill are encouraged to get in touch with the city to become eligible for not only the senior citizen discount but also other assistance programs. The City's website states: "It unlocks multiple bill-related services, including water bill assistance programs that can help you save money."
For those who don't cut the 25% discount, there's still the Tiered Assistance Program (TAP) which is designed to keep water bills within reach for low-income Philadelphians. This program is particularly beneficial as it offers to forgive all accumulated water bill debt after 24 consistent payments, eradicating penalties first and then the principal amount.
One application is all it takes to apply for either the senior discount or TAP, with the online method touted as the quickest and most convenient. Those without internet access or who require assistance with the process can seek help at various partner locations across the city. "Don’t have internet connection or need help completing your application? Please visit a partner location to get all the help you need," suggests the City's announcement.
Prior to applying, applicants are reminded to provide one proof of residency, such as a state-issued ID, and proof of income for every household member. All necessary supporting documents are outlined in the application form. Once submitted, the city will determine which program offers the greatest savings. Applicants or those needing further clarification can call (215) 685-6300 for more information.
