
A month-long investigation into a grim discovery at a West Philadelphia park has culminated in the arrest of a local man on murder charges. On January 30, at approximately 9:42 a.m., Philadelphia police responded to the 700 block of North 47th Street at Lucien Blackwell Park following a report of a body in a garbage can, NBC Philadelphia reported.
Upon arrival, the deceased individual was found and pronounced dead by medics shortly after at 9:50 a.m. She was later identified as Deborah Leatherberry, a 54-year-old resident from the 6100 block of Wheeler Street. An examination revealed that she had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to her left temple, during the continued investigation, 61-year-old Ricardo Ponds of the 400 block of Lancaster Avenue was identified as the suspect. Following the investigation's findings, SEPTA officers arrested Ponds on Wednesday at the intersection of 15th and Market streets, according to FOX 29 and CBS News Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia police have since indicated that Ponds will face several charges, including Murder, Violations of the Uniform Firearms Act (VUFA), and related offenses. While this development marks a significant step in the case, police have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, with further details yet to be released.
