Pittsburgh police have initiated an investigation following the discovery of card skimmers at a grocery store in Carrick, putting shoppers' financial security at risk. According to WPXI, the debit card drama unfolded at the Shop 'n Save on Brownsville Road, where unsuspecting customers were relieved of hundreds of dollars in SNAP benefits, a critical lifeline for purchasing groceries.
The impact of the fraudulent activity has left many reeling. "When I went to check my balance, $380 bucks was gone. $379, they left me $1.60 on it," Maryann Reagan, an Allentown resident, stated, as reported by WPXI. Similarly, from Mount Oliver, Tina Anderson found her EBT card stripped of $750, sharing, "It was unexpected, and it hurt. It hurt." These stories are echoes among other victims who now face the pinching reality of SNAP benefits that refuse to be reissued by the Health and Human Services Department.
The criminal strategy involved attaching skimmers to the store's registers, which mischievously gathered the card data of unsuspecting customers, allowing thieves to drain accounts soon after. The Shop 'n Save's manager uncovered one of the devices by pure happenstance when it detached from a register, leading to the discovery of a second skimmer upon further inspection. "I don’t get how someone can do that - take your benefits that you feed your kids with," said Amanda Morgan, recounting the loss of $1,100 in SNAP benefits to WPXI.
Warnings have since escalated, with Pittsburgh-area police departments cautioning consumers to be vigilant about such devices. As reported by CBS News Pittsburgh, individuals like Donald Nemit have expressed concerns after witnessing his stepson's SNAP balance vanish. "I love technology, but I think sometimes technology has opened up too much where unrighteous people can get in and steal your money," Nemit said, sharing a sentiment that reverberates for many in the wake of such incidents.
Authorities recommend that shoppers closely examine point-of-sale systems for suspicious attachments and consider changing PINs regularly to deter potential fraud. In the event of suspicious activities or the discovery of skimming devices, the police urge the public to file a report to initiate investigative procedures and help prevent further victimization within their community.
