A Queens couple has been sentenced to 14 years behind bars for an attempted murder, following a savage attack on their neighbor over a dispute concerning a parking spot. On March 17, 2023, Arturo Cuevas, 32, and Daisy Barrera, 28, assaulted Wilson Chabla Lliguicota, a 28-year-old man, using a knife and a metal baseball bat. The Queens District Attorney's Office reported that the couple had entered a guilty plea and were sentenced on January 7, prior to their expected trial.

According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, "This was a near deadly attack over a parking spot. The defendants became irate to the point that they senselessly stabbed, and beat a man with a metal baseball bat." The attack, which took place in Sunnyside, was captured on video by another neighbor and shook the local community.

The incident esclated when the victim, a truck driver for a major retailer, parked his vehicle near his home, running afoul of the couple's long-simmering anger over a previously contested parking spot from eleven months before. As reported by the Queens District Attorney's Office, Cuevas and Barrera confronted Lliguicota, resulting in Cuevas stabbing him several times and Barrera hitting him over the head with the bat. When Lliguicota's girlfriend attempted to intervene, she too was struck by Barrera.

The violent encounter ended once the police arrived following which, the couple retreated to their apartment and were arrested after a standoff of about 20 minutes, DA Katz said, the couple's actions led to serious injuries. Lliguicota necessitated surgery for severe brain trauma and is now unable to return to his job as he can no longer operate heavy machinery due the injuries he sustained.

Assistant District Attorney Alexia Campoverde, of the District Attorney’s Career Criminal Major Crimes Bureau, prosecuted the case. It was supervised by Assistant District Attorney Michael Whitney, Bureau Chief, and Roni Piplani, Deputy Chief, as well as Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Shawn Clark.
