As leaves cover the urban landscape, residents of Raleigh's City of Oaks have various options for managing their yard waste. The bare trees signal the time for locals to decide on their leaf disposal method. These choices are important due to their impact on municipal services and local ecosystems.
The most convenient option might seem to be bagging leaves, only now, Raleigh insists on the use of biodegradable paper bags, as reported by the City of Raleigh. You can "Place as many as 15 biodegradable paper bags at the curb for your yard waste pick-up day." This shift away from previous plastic use is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste and help yard waste crews improve their efficiency.
For those interested in gardening, composting leaves can create nutrient-rich soil, reducing the need for fertilizer. Alternatively, leaves can be dropped off at the Yard Waste Center. Another option is to leave the leaves as natural mulch, which can help with plant health, water conservation, wildlife, and weed control.
Meanwhile, the Transportation Department is prepared to collect leaf piles using their specialized vacuum equipment during their designated "Loose Leaf Collection" periods. "Rake your leaves into a pile at the edge of your yard, not in the street. Please keep limbs, vines, rocks and trash out of leaf piles as they can damage the vacuum," according to the City of Raleigh. Alternatively, Raleigh's lime green yard waste carts stand ready for leaf deposition, a service that's accounted for on your regular waste collection day.
