Keeping up with the workings of city government just got easier for Raleigh residents. The City Council's budget work sessions can now be watched live, providing an opportunity for the public to stay informed on the fiscal decisions shaping their city. When the Council convenes, a live stream link will be made available on the city's official website, a convenience celebrated by civic engagement advocates.
To catch the action in real time, interested parties should look for the event date's blue box on the City Council Live page – that's where the live stream link will appear next to the session's details. And if technical difficulties should arise, which sometimes they do, viewers can always pivot to a YouTube link provided further down the page. "If the link does NOT appear (or the video doesn't seem to be working correctly), please scroll further down and watch the meeting live by clicking on the YouTube link," the policy states.
However, the city makes it clear that it doesn't endorse any ads or subsequent videos that YouTube might overlay or recommend post-meeting. Furthermore, while YouTube streams the meeting, it won't provide the accompanying agenda. That document is available through BoardDocs, where minutes can also be accessed for a deeper dive into the Council's processes and decisions.
For those who may have missed the live stream, the City offers a simple solution. All past meetings are cataloged and accessible via their Video Services page. Even beyond scheduled meetings, Raleigh's RTN Channel keeps content flowing continuously. "Our RTN Channel is always streaming something. If it's not a live stream of a meeting currently in session, it's a recent, pre-recorded meeting," the city notes. By pressing the play button on the website, residents can tune into whatever is currently broadcasting.
