In an effort to tackle the critical issue of pet overpopulation, Rancho Cordova's city government and local organizations are stepping up to champion Spay and Neuter Awareness Month with an array of free services for pet owners. Last year saw over 5 million animals enter the shelter system across the United States, highlighting the ongoing struggle to manage the burgeoning population of homeless pets.

Rancho Cordova residents have the opportunity to benefit from free spay and neuter services provided by Whisker Warriors, a local group aiding in the initiative. As described on its official website, the vouchers for these services are being offered through the city’s Community Enhancement & Investment Fund, and while the appointments are limited, they are made available on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can often find the Whisker Warriors team distributing treats for cats and dogs, free of charge at community events, while also tending to the needs of stray animals roaming the streets.

But that's not all when it comes to the support the city is providing to pet owners. "The city is dedicated to fostering responsible and compassionate pet ownership in our community," April Stevenson, Animal Services Officer, said in a statement obtained by the City of Rancho Cordova's news release. Additional free offerings include pet vaccine clinics throughout the year, pet licensing, and I.D. tags for the furry members of families in Rancho Cordova.

On top of these services, the city has also launched the Animal Services Assistance Program (ASAP), thanks to a grant from U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to help pet owners during times of financial hardship, from dealing with veterinary bills to addressing behavior issues and even helping to repair broken fences. The program, since its inception, has not only had support from other organizations but private donors have been contributed to its success as well.

For more information about the Animal Services team and how to take advantage of the ASAP program, residents can visit CityofRanchoCordova.org/AnimalServices. As noted in the city's announcement, these initiatives are key pillars in the mission to build a healthier and more loving environment for pets and their owners alike – educating, supporting, and providing assistance when needed.
