Rolesville has hit a green milestone once again, being recognized as Tree City USA for the ninth straight year, a nod to its commitment to urban forestry and environmental stewardship. This recognition is not merely a title; it reflects the town's concerted efforts to plant and nurture trees, along with its strategic planning to ensure these natural resources continue to flourish for future generations. According to the Town of Rolesville official announcement, the town has been proactive in removing invasive plants and planting native greenery in public spaces.
Attaining Tree City USA designation requires adhering to standards that are not taken lightly. Among the criteria, a community needs a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance in place, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and it must host an Arbor Day event. Rolesville has updated their Land Development Ordinance to afford better protection to the local treescape, addressing one of the core standards head-on. In a recent Arbor Day event, the town did more than just talk about trees - they put shovels to the earth and planted them, as a tangible testament to their commitment.
The program behind this label, Tree City USA, is managed by the Arbor Day Foundation—a global nonprofit dedicated to planting trees. Since its establishment in 1972, this organization has been pivotal in planting over 500 million trees across 60 countries, emphasizing the critical role of trees in our urban environments. Participation in the Tree City USA program is more than symbolic, it represents an ongoing dedication to enhancing sustainability and livability through keen attention to urban forestry.
