San Antonio is pushing for more transparency in its public utilities. Recently, Councilmembers Teri Castillo (District 5) and Marc Whyte (District 10) called for CPS Energy's Community Input Committee (CIC) to make its subcommittee meetings open to the public. After a December 9 meeting of the Municipal Utilities Committee, it became clear that citizens and their representatives want more openness in managing public utilities.

Understanding that utilities form the backbone of everyday life, Castillo and Whyte co-authored a letter to stress their point. "A public utility must be accessible and transparent in everything they do," Castillo said in the City of San Antonio. The need for such transparency has become heightened especially since CPS Energy has not hesitated to only twice request a rate hike since 2021. Whyte added, "We owe it to our neighbors to seek more transparency from CPS Energy, and they should be given the opportunity to join conversations that will directly affect their day-to-day lives."

At a subsequent CIC meeting on January 8, CPS Energy discussed the mechanisms necessary to implement changes to address these transparency concerns. It was made clear that a resolution from the CIC itself would be pivotal in creating the conditions for open subcommittee meetings. This represents a procedural roadmap for those wishing to hold public utilities accountable and ensure that stakeholders can monitor and engage in discussions impacting them.
