A chilling incident unfolded yesterday in San Antonio when, according to authorities, a man in his 30s drove his vehicle into Woodlawn Lake and subsequently brandished a knife at an approaching park police officer. As reported by FOX San Antonio, the first officer on the scene, with nine years under her belt, witnessed the suspect drive through the park's grassy expanse before ending up in the lake, shortly before 12:30 p.m.
Upon her attempt to engage, the officer, whom the KENS 5 reported as being a nine-year veteran of the Park Police Department, found herself facing a man emerging from the vehicle with a knife and stepping toward her the suspect refused to drop the weapon despite repeated commands, which led her backing up until she reached the walking track when she ultimately fired two shots, striking him in the torso.
The man was taken to the hospital in critical, but stable condition, with officials confirming that no other individuals were harmed during the confrontation. Neighbors nearby were drawn to the scene, some having heard the shots fired. Charles Oisten, a local resident, recounted to KENS 5 the nature of the gunshots he heard, "They sounded deliberate because it was only two shots, like bang bang and what I’ve heard in the past is like rapid fire off in the distant."
Investigators, still piecing together the circumstances that led to this dangerous exchange, have yet to determine the man's motives. "I don't know what his motivations are," commented Assistant Chief Jesse Salame, pointing to the broader scope of their inquiry, concerns and questions circulate among the public also remains unsaid why the individual drove into the park in the first instance, as detailed by KENS 5. As the investigation continues, further details are expected to emerge concerning the events leading up to the shooting.
