After striking a fire hydrant and causing a major collision at the Lincoln Avenue and Third Street intersection last Saturday, witnesses reported a water geyser shot into the power lines by the sheared-off fire hydrant and blocked the roadway. Emergency responders, battling against the dangerous conditions caused by the water geyser reaching the power lines, found two significantly damaged vehicles, one on its side up against a building.
The San Rafael Fire Department and SRPD responded within a minute of the crash. One of the drivers, Martinez-Jimenez, exhibited signs of alcohol impairment and sustained minor injuries. The second driver, a 39-year-old female, suffered serious injuries and required immediate transport to a local hospital, as per the authorities' statement.
During the subsequent investigation, officers determined that Martinez-Jimenez had a suspended driving privilege and was on probation for a prior DUI. He was booked into Marin County Jail, facing charges of felony DUI resulting in injury, driving on a suspended driving privilege, failing to comply with a DUI interlock device requirement, and probation violations. The emergency response to the scene was complicated by the water and electricity hazards, and the intersection remained closed for hours for investigation and cleanup.
