Authorities in Sonoma County apprehended a 53-year-old transient man, identified as James Boyden, on charges of attempted kidnapping and other offenses following a frightening incident in a Santa Rosa parking lot. A social media post shared by the Sonoma Sheriff detailed events occurring last Saturday, pinpointing the onset of the disturbance at approximately 9:42 a.m. when deputies were called to address a man's aggressive behavior towards patrons near the 4000 block of Santa Rosa Avenue.
Boyden's menacing conduct escalated swiftly. Only ten minutes after the initial report, dispatchers received new information that a man matching Boyden's description was attempting to shatter the window of a woman's car while she was inside. In the near follow-up, the suspect was strolling along Santa Rosa Avenue, brandishing a bottle of wine. Since he was on probation, with a clear stipulation prohibiting him from alcohol possession, a deputy apprehended him, according to the Sheriff's office, without incident.
Further accounts indicated that before his encounter with the deputies, Boyden had approached two individuals in a car threateningly with a fragmented wine bottle and later assailed another woman in her car. "He began yelling at her to get out of her car and threatening her while punching the car’s window," the Sonoma Sheriff's post narrated. In a distressing attempt, Boyden tried to pry open the driver's side door but was foiled by its locked state, allowing the woman to drive away from the perilous scene.
Post-arrest, Boyden was charged with felony criminal threats, felony attempted kidnapping, misdemeanor disorderly conduct, and violation of probation. His bail has been set at $101,000, and he remains in custody.
