Teyerra Shontel Woods, 26, from Smithfield, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense. She allegedly submitted fake photos to Liberty Mutual to claim $2,076 for damages to property she didn't own, including a gaming device, clothing, a touchscreen computer, and a 75-inch smart TV, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
Woods was involved in a fraud on January 24 and turned herself in to Johnston County authorities on Tuesday. She was charged and released on a $30,000 unsecured bond. Her fraudulent claim was exposed by digital evidence, which contradicted her actions, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey urges the public to help fight insurance fraud, stating, "Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," said Commissioner Causey. "It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums." He encourages citizens to report fraud anonymously, stating, "You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684," as stated by the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
