Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi announced the appointment of Steve Colangelo as interim city manager. Colangelo replaces Harry Black, who resigned earlier this year. The mayor described Colangelo as committed to the city and a proven leader.
According to abc10, Colangelo has experience in revitalizing the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds and supporting the San Joaquin Asparagus Festival. His focus will be on improving public safety, addressing homelessness, driving economic development, and creating youth opportunities. However, some council members and residents raised concerns about the decision and Colangelo's lack of governmental experience.
During a meeting, the council voted 4-3 in favor of Colangelo. Councilmember Michael Blower expressed doubts, saying, "Running a city takes a lot of knowledge and a lot of skill and a lot of training," questioning Colangelo’s ability to manage the city's complex issues, as reported by FOX40. Councilmember Mario Enriquez also shared concerns about Colangelo’s qualifications.
Vice Mayor Jason Lee supported the decision, stating, "We’re not going to let any city manager politic the plays that happen in the city. We’re not going to let them play with people’s lives. We’re not going to let them give excuses," as noted by FOX40. Mayor Fugazi emphasized that Colangelo's non-bureaucratic background is an asset.
Colangelo’s appointment is pending a background check and is expected to take effect on Tuesday next week.
