A violent altercation between two high school students at Avondale High School in Auburn Hills escalated to a stabbing early this morning. WWJ Newsradio reports that around 8:30 a.m., the students confronted each other in a bathroom, which sadly resulted in a 15-year-old being stabbed by a 16-year-old.
Shortly after the incident, the suspect was reportedly seen on camera hastily leaving the school premises. Authorities were able to quickly locate him "within about an hour," and he has since been speaking with investigators. This was confirmed by police, who also mentioned that the victim's injuries were deemed "minor non-life threatening," according to the same WWJ Newsradio report.
During the incident, as a precaution, both Avondale High School and nearby Auburn Elementary were subjected to a soft lockdown. This measure was intended to keep students securely in their classrooms while police worked to ensure safety. ClickOnDetroit advises that the lockdown has since been lifted, indicating no further concerns for student safety.
The unfortunate event has raised concerns about safety in educational environments. A spokesperson for the school district assured the community that the situation was an "isolated incident between two students," as per statements obtained by WWJ Newsradio. Despite the assurance, the Auburn Hills Police Department continues to investigate the situation and they have been thoroughly searching for any additional details to ascertain the cause of the altercation that led to the stabbing, as noted by WXYZ.
In the wake of the incident, police and school officials are expected to further review school security measures and protocols to ensure a safe learning environment. Parents and the community are to stay informed as more information becomes available and the school district's investigation in collaboration with police unfolds.
