Following an intense search, the U.S. Marshals, as part of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF), have successfully apprehended 23-year-old Shashawn Atkinson, a suspect in a fatal Cleveland shooting that occurred last year. The arrest took place in Cleveland, Ohio, and addresses an incident that happened on August 3, 2024, which left one man dead and another seriously injured. The NOVFTF — a team including multiple law enforcement agencies — worked closely to track and secure Atkinson's arrest.
Reports from the U.S. Marshals Service divulge that the incident in question led to 22-year-old Anthony Williams' unfortunate death due to gunshot wounds, with 24-year-old Antwoine Sandford also wounded in the incident. Jamelle Swanson, 24, was initially identified as a suspect and subsequently arrested on January 3. Atkinson's role in the incident was also later uncovered, prompting a warrant for aggravated murder and leading to his arrest at an address in the 2800 block of E. 124th Street, Cleveland.
U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott praised the joint efforts that led to Atkinson's capture, stating via the U.S. Marshals Service, “Outstanding work was done by the Cleveland Division of Police homicide unit on this investigation. Their investigation led to the identification of these suspects and then our fugitive task force worked relentlessly to track down and arrest the second suspect today.” This statement accentuates the collaborative nature of the task force's approach to investigating and resolving such severe cases.
Members of the NOVFTF combine resources and expertise from various agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority Police Department, and multiple local Ohio police departments. This comprehensive network was indeed instrumental in swiftly managing to arrest Atkinson. The public is still encouraged to help bring fugitives to justice.
