Youngstown, Ohio is levelling up in the tech game with a new innovation hub that's set to shake things up in the aerospace and defense industries. With a hefty $26 million from the Ohio Innovation Hubs Program and $36 million more pulled together from local, federal, and private sources, this is a serious move to edge these sectors forward. According to Governor Mike DeWine, as reported by the Ohio Department of Development, the new Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace and Defense is all about "critical advancements" in how military gear is made.

Speaking of gear, we're not talking about your grandfather's wrench and hammer. This hub's bread and butter is additive manufacturing or 3-D printing, the tech that lets you print out a jet part like you're making a copy of a concert flyer. And it's not just about tech glitz; this venture is a goldmine for the local workforce. It’s predicted to stir up about $161.6 million in economic impact by 2029 and create 450 new jobs. That's including 100 gigs in construction to get the hub itself up and running in the Vindicator II building, a spot once buzzing with the hum of newspaper presses. Now it's set to buzz with the sounds of innovation and industry growth.

Driving the helm will be America Makes, pioneers in the additive manufacturing space since 2012 and known buddies with the U.S. Department of Defense. This new initiative is a collaboration fiesta, with names like the Youngstown Business Incubator, Youngstown State University, and the local regional chamber all in the mix. This isn't just a today thing or a tomorrow thing: it’s a full-on workforce revolution with plans to pump up the local skill set, tossing in 185 STEM credentials and 40 internships into the career stew of the region.

Lt. Governor Jim Tressel has heralded the project as a triumph for community effort, signaling a new chapter for Youngstown's economy. The announcement holds particular significance as an extension of the region's manufacturing legacy, reaffirming its stake in the future of production. Lydia Mihalik, the Ohio Department of Development Director, put it this way. The Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace and Defense isn't just about “Made in Ohio” pride, it's about tangible, lasting economic growth that will ripple through generations.

Of course, it's not just state cash making this happen. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is chipping in $1.2 million, thanks to a program aimed at giving a leg up to areas that coal mining left in the dust. And when we talk about partners, we're talking about a laundry list of companies and organizations, each one ready to roll up their sleeves – from Additive Engineering Solutions to Youngstown State University Foundation and just about everyone in between.

The CEO of the Youngstown Business Incubator, Barb Ewing, summed it up well, the community’s joint effort turned a shared vision into a winning outcome. President & CEO of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, Guy Coviello, echoed the sentiment, expressing gratitude for the state leaders' recognition of the Mahoning Valley's potential and the substantial boost this project offers to the region's economic vitality and workforce development. The projection for Ohio's Innovation Hubs is nothing short of grand – by 2031, we might see a combined economic impact of $1.02 billion, 6,450 new jobs, and a surge in STEM credentials across the state.
