Officials report that a fire erupted in an Annapolis apartment building on Monday afternoon and has since been extinguished without injuries or displacement of any residents. The incident occurred around 3:40 p.m. in the rooftop elevator room of a six-story building at 600 Americana Drive. After investigation, the Annapolis Fire and Explosives Services Unit concluded the cause was a malfunctioning HVAC window unit in the elevator room, as reported by FOX Baltimore.

Firefighters arriving on the scene witnessed smoke emanating from the elevator room and quickly gained access to the roof to commence an aggressive attack. It took them around 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Though it remains uncertain if the fire has damaged the elevator components, the power to the elevators was proactively turned off to prevent any potential use.

The Annapolis Fire Department's social media post further indicated, "Fortunately, the fire did not spread to any apartments, and no residents were displaced." They also acknowledged the assistance of mutual aid partners from Anne Arundel County and the Naval District Washington Fire Departments for their support during the event.

The community is relieved that no civilians or firefighters were injured. The damage to the apartment building is still being assessed. For now, residents must adjust to the temporary elevator shutdown, as safety is the top priority until further updates are provided.
